An abnormal result never stands alone. It opens a defined set of possibilities, and a specific next test narrows them. That logic is the same whether the sample came from a Labrador or a lake. What differs is the biology, and we never carry one species’ numbers into another.
Beyond Dogs & Cats
One Engine. Every Vertebrate.
Plainvue’s reflex engine was built and proven on dogs and cats. The architecture underneath it is species-agnostic: it transfers to any vertebrate, from salmon to giraffes.

How it transfers
The logic stays. The biology is configured, species by species.
WHAT STAYS THE SAME
- The rules engine: Deterministic, inspectable, versioned.
- The interdependency logic: Which result opens which possibilities, and which follow-up resolves them.
- One-click follow-up: A recommendation becomes an ordered, tracked test.
- The audit trail: Every recommendation records the rule and the reason behind it.
WHAT IS BUILT PER SPECIES
- Reference intervals: Species-, breed-, and stock-specific where the evidence exists.
- Actionable thresholds: What counts as a result worth acting on.
- Reflex rules: Configured and validated with qualified domain experts for that species.
- The test menu: Whatever the laboratory actually runs, not what we assume it runs.
NOT JUST BLOOD
The engine reasons over laboratory results, whatever the assay.
In companion animals the input is serum chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis. In an aquatic animal health laboratory it is molecular and pathogen testing: qPCR and dPCR screens, bacterial identification, environmental DNA. The engine does not care which. A result comes in, a rule fires, the right next step is recommended and recorded.
RESULTS
A qPCR pathogen screen on a hatchery submission returns positive.
RULE FIRES
The approved reflex rule for that pathogen recommends confirmatory testing on the retained sub-sample and flags related submissions from the same site.
HUMAN DECIDES
The laboratory’s authorized staff review the recommendation and approve, modify, or decline it. Nothing runs on its own.
RECORDED
The rule, the reason, the decision, and the person who made it are written to the audit trail.
HUMAN CONTROL
In-depth tracking: Humans stay in charge.
The engine is deterministic, not generative. It does not guess, and it does not act. It surfaces the right next test and shows its work, and a person decides.
- Every recommendation traces to a rule: A clinician or laboratory scientist can open any recommendation and see exactly which rule produced it and why.
- Authorized people approve every consequential action: Follow-up orders, escalations, and final reports are released by people, never by the engine.
- Operations continue without it: The engine sits beside the system of record, not inside its critical path; if it is offline, the laboratory keeps running.
- Built for the audit trail: Versioned rules, recorded reasons, human override tracking; designed to be inspected, not trusted blindly.
WHERE THIS GOES
Companion Animals Today. Every Vertebrate Next.
DOGS & CATS
Breed-specific interpretation, owner portal, one-click follow-up. Patent pending.
AQUACULTURE & FISH HEALTH
Pathogen screening, confirmatory reflex rules, site-level surveillance.
EQUINE & LIVESTOCK
Herd and stable monitoring with the same rules architecture.
ZOO & WILDLIFE
Species where reference data is thin, with explicit fallback rules rather than silent assumptions.
